Warrior gymnastics competes in Louisiana

The Winona State University gymnastics team traveled south for their meet this week. It was at this triangular in Shreveport, Louisiana that the Warriors captured their highest team score of the season thus far. Scoring a 186.075, they were third behind Alaska-Anchorage (190.025) and Centenary who won their home meet with a 190.500.

The team started out their night on beam, where they scored a season-high score of 46.250. Cassandra Mello led the Warriors with her extremely impressive routine, which scored a 9.700. This score was good for third place and was also a season best for Mello.

Kimberly Miske chipped in to the team score with her 9.250. Brooke Baures earned a 9.200. Brooke Hiestand started her night off receiving a 9.175.

In their bars rotation, all the Warriors had a 9.075 or better. Danielle Thenell led the lineup with a season-high score 9.575. Anna Gleason got a 9.450 for her performance. Olivia Catellino finished out the rotation with a 9.300.

The apparatus total, 46.525, was a season best and a fourth-best score on the event in program history.

On the floor exercise, Winona State had a team totaled score of 46.425. Mello was the highest scoring, with a 9.450. Stephanie Wojton was right behind that with a 9.425. Samantha Smith earned a 9.300 for her routine, and Hiestand chipped in with her 9.225 to the overall team score.

Ending the meet on vault, all of the gymnasts got a 9.200 or better for their vaults. Kelsey Valdez had the highest score with a 9.450. Jade Donaldson had a 9.375 for her vault. Wojton, Mello and Hiestand all had a 9.350 to help the team to earn another season-high score on an apparatus. They earned a 46.875, the closest event score this year to a 47.000.

The team will travel to the University of Minnesota on Feb. 16 to compete at the Best of Minnesota meet at the Sports Pavilion. They will face two Division III teams they have already competed against this season, Hamline and Gustavus Adolphus. They will also face the host team, the Minnesota Gophers, who are ranked 13th nationally for Division I gymnastics.
