We have reached the final stretch of sports in the academic year at Winona State University. So now it would be a better time than ever to see where the women’s tennis team. Especially with contests across the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the team are fighting for position in their conference tournaments.
The women’s tennis team sits 6-12 overall during the season. Lainy Ristau leads a singles record with 11-7 marks in duals this season. In doubles matches, Izabel Barr and Ristau hold the strongest record with 5 wins in seven matches.
In their most recent action, Winona State had a homestead against the University of Wisconsin-Superior and Coe College. The first match of the day against Superior, the Warriors wanted to make a statement early. They took the doubles series with a pair of wins from Ristau and Barr six sets to one in the first doubles match. Clara Thoemke and Ally Burger also got the job done with six set to three victories. Thoemke, Ristau, Barr, and Kate Verlander all took their single matches to secure the victory against the Yellowjackets.
After their matchup against UW-Superior, the Warriors wanted to continue their momentum against Coe. Winona State dominated the doubles matches, with all three duos picking up victories. Only one Warrior picked up a singles victory, as Ristau won both her matches six sets to four. The Kohawks picked up the 5-2 victory against Winona State in their second match of the day.
The Warriors have a pair of conference matches leading up towards the NSIC Tournament. Starting off with a trip to Sioux Falls to take on the University of Sioux Falls on Apr. 10 and Augustana University on Apr. 11.
Winona State currently stands in eighth across the NSIC, with the tournament implications in hand. The top six teams in the conference will make the trip to Sioux Falls, and there is a little time left for the Warriors. With only three conference matches left, the purple and white needs to finish the regular season off strong. Especially with the road trip to Sioux Falls this week, this final stretch will make or break their tournament hopes.
