WSU second at Best of Minnesota Meet

The Winona State University gymnastics team competed at the Best of Minnesota quad meet on Saturday, hosted by the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

They placed second, only behind the host school, with one of their higher team scores of the season. Minnesota won the meet with a 196.000.

The Warriors were second with a 184.975. Hamline was third (184.675) and Gustavus Adolphus was fourth (177.450).

The Warriors opened up the meet on beam where they had a combined team score of 45.050. Stephanie Wojton was the highest scoring Warrior with a 9.350 and was 12th overall. Cassandra Mello and Brooke Baures also contributed to the team score with a 9.175 and 9.150, respectively, and placed 13th and 14th.

On their floor rotation, Wojton again led the team with the highest score for Winona. She placed ninth with a 9.550.

Anna Gleason and Mello tied for tenth, each with a 9.375. Brooke Hiestand was right behind them, placing 12th overall with a 9.325. Sabrina Hoover earned a 9.200 for her routine and was tied for 15th overall.

Rounding out the lineup was Katie Seehusen, who received a 9.150, in 17th place. Their apparatus totaled score was one of the higher of the season—46.825.

Moving on to vault, the Warriors scored their eighth highest apparatus score in school history. Kelsey Valdez led the way, placing seventh with a 9.600.

Jade Donaldson earned a 9.550 for her vault, placing her tied for ninth. Mello placed right behind Donaldson with a 9.500 in 11th place.

Jena Jondahl and Wojton also chipped in their scores to the team total. Wojton was 14th with a 9.375 and Jondahl had a 9.050, good for 21st place.

The Warriors ended their night on their fourth rotation, on the bars. Gleason had the fifth overall highest score of the night with a 9.400. Olivia Catellino tied for sixth with a 9.325. Melanee Pfautz was tenth with a 9.150. Donaldson’s 9.125 earned her an 11th place finish, and Baures placed 13th overall with a 9.025.

Winona did not have any of their gymnasts compete in the all around, but Jenny Covers of Minnesota was all around champion with a combined score of 39.125.

The Warriors, currently ranked fourth in the nation, will be back in action on Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. in the McCown Gymnasium, competing a duel meet against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks.
