Warriors win final regular season meet

The Winona State University gymnastics team won its final regular season meet in front of the home crowd this past Thursday in McCown Gymnasium against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds.

The Warriors won with 185.300, one of their higher team scores of the season, over Eau Claire, who had a 181.600.

This also happened to be the seventh consecutive meet of the season that the Warriors have had a team score of 182.00 or better.

Winona State started their competition out on vault, where all of the five counting scores were a 9.125 or higher.

Jena Jondahl led the team with her 9.475 and a first place finish for the individual event title.

Jade Donaldson and Brooke Hiestand swept the remaining podium places with a 9.350 and a 9.250. Donaldson was second, while Hiestand was third.

Emily Goldeman finished in seventh place with a 9.150. Cassandra Mello finished out the vault lineup with an eighth place finish for her vault of 9.125.

The Warriors totaled a 46.350 team score on the vault.

In rotation two, the Warriors again swept first, second and third place.

Danielle Thenell took first on the uneven bars with an impressive 9.650. Thenell is currently ranked ninth in the nation on this apparatus with an average score of 9.468.

Olivia Catellino was runner-up with a 9.550. Brooke Baures and Anna Gleason tied for third place, both with 9.350’s.

Donaldson rounded out the five contributing scores with her 8.800, which was good for ninth place. The team scored 46.700, one of their higher uneven bar team scores of the season.

They scored a 45.875 in their next event, the balance beam. Sabrina Hoover led the team with her 9.450 and first place finish.

Baures followed behind her with a 9.250 and the second place title. In fourth was Donaldson with a 9.125. Kimberly Miske was fifth with a 9.075 and Mello was sixth with an 8.975.

The Warriors finished out the night on the floor exercise, where all five contributing scores were a 9.125 or higher.

Anna Gleason earned a 9.525 for second place finish. Hiestand was fifth overall with a 9.325. Mello earned a 9.275 for her routine and placed seventh. Stepanie Wojton and Hoover tied for ninth both with 9.125’s. The Warriors put together a 46.375 team score for floor.

Danieille Schulzetenberg, from UW-Eau Claire, was the only gymnast to compete in the all around at this meet, so she finished in first with a 35.000.

The No. 7 nationally ranked Warriors will compete next on March 9th in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. They will be competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Regional Championships.
