Warriors split weekend road games

The Winona State University women’s soccer team started their two game conference play Saturday with a win against St. Cloud State.

The Warriors’ defense controlled the game as they allowed only four total shots, with three being on goal from the Huskies.

Winona State was able to produce 26 total shots, with 15 on goal. They also had two goals with one assist.

The first goal for the Warriors came in the first half from Taylor Zehren, who scored in the 49th minute. Kara Dahmen of St. Cloud battled back scoring from a corner kick in the 60th minute.

A 1-1 tie concluded as time dwindled down, and the two teams went into the first of two overtimes.

After being scoreless in the first overtime, Kati Baker scored with less than a minute to go with an assist from Meg Riebau.

Reibau has helped to assist in Winona State’s game-winning goals in the last two games.

Riebau led the team with five total shots, with two on goal. Zehren’s sole shot of the day was the first Warrior goal. Baker aided the team with one other shot adding to her scoring the second goal of the game.

Hadley Bales, Jennifer DeRoo and Alaina Kne each added three individual shots to the team total. Rebecca McCoy and Devon Richards also helped the team with two shots. Madalyn Jansen, Morgan LeFebvre, Megan Paulick and Nicole Sames each added one shot to the team’s total.

Dahmen lead her team with four total shots, one being a scoring shot. Naomi Kolhoff had one shot, being on goal, while Taige Thoresen also had one shot to contribute to the Huskies.

Warrior goalkeeper, Alexandra Vial, allowed one goal but was able to save another two.

St. Cloud’s keeper, Brittany Plombon, allowed two goals and had 12 saves during the day.

Sunday afternoon, the Warriors played the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Winona State fell short after a strong effort, loosing 2-1 to the Bulldogs.

Maureen Stormont scored the game’s first goal for the Bulldogs off an assist from Dani Potter in the 47th minute. Stormont scored her second goal of the day three minutes later off an assist from Riley Allen.

Trailing the Bulldogs 2-0, the Warriors were put on the board by Bales, who netted the lone Winona State goal with 19 minutes left. She was assisted by teammate DeRoo.

Winona State had 11 total shots, five being on goal. DeRoo had one shot to add to her assist.

LeFebvre contributed four individual shots for the team, while Sames had two. Ribau had one shot on goal and Baker also had one shot.

The Bulldogs totaled 16 shots on the day, with seven of those being on goal. Stormont lead with her two goals and added another two shots to the team’s total. Jennifer Smith had three shots, with one being on goal. Sally Stomme and Potter each had two shots.

Vial was able to save five shots but allowed two goals. The Bulldog’s keeper allowed one goal and made four total saves.

The Warriors are now 2-2-2 overall and 1-2 in NSIC play. The Warriors head out on the road next week, starting with Minot State Sept. 27.
