Soccer dominates at home, scores six goals over weekend

The Winona State University women’s soccer team started its commanding weekend play winning a home conference game against Minnesota State University Moorhead 3-0 on Oct. 5.

The Warriors totaled 22 shots in the game, ten of them on goal. With a ruling defense, the Warriors only let Moorhead take a total of four shots, only one on goal.

Winona State’s goalkeeper, Alexandra Vial, allowed zero goals against Moorhead and made one save, making it the fourth recorded shutout of the season.

Moorhead’s keeper allowed three goals but was able to make seven saves.

Rebecca McCoy scored her second goal this season off a free kick from teammate, Devon Richards, just over five minutes into the first half of the game. This was the only point scored during the first half. McCoy also had one more shot to add to the day.

Kati Baker, who had an assist off of Hadley Bales, scored the second goal of the game during the 52nd minute.

Both Baker and Bales totaled two shots during the game.

Baker also leads the Warriors this season with three goals apiece.

Mehan Bolton scored the Warriors’ final goal in the 70th minute of the game, with an assist from Shauana Rodman. Both girls were also able to contribute one other shot to their total for the day.

Jennifer DeRoo led the way with three total shots, one being on goal. Meg Riebau and Kenzie Rose had two shots each with one of them on goal. Cailyn McCauley also added two individual shots.

Samantha Fegan, Alaina Kne, Morgan LeFebvre and Nikole Porter each had one shot to add to the team’s total.

The second home game of the weekend came Sunday, where the Warriors commanded another conference game against Northern State University, shutting them out with another 3-0 win.

Bales and Riebau both scored their first goals of the season. Riebau scored in the 55th minute of the second half with a header off of Porter. Bales scored next during the 60th minute.

DeRoo scored the Warriors’ last goal late in the second half, with an assist from Bolton. This was DeRoo’s second goal of the season.

Vial recorded a second straight shutout of the weekend, bringing her total to five this season.

Winona State totaled 16 shots on the day, nine of which were on goal.

DeRoo and Bales led the team with three individual shots, one of each being their goals. Kne and Bolton totaled two shots during the day.

Baker, Madalyn Jansen, McCoy, Richards, Riebau and Nicole Sames finished out with one shot each.

NSU totaled only four shots during the game, with one being on goal. Allie Macdonald led her team with one shot, which was on goal.

The Warriors are now 6-2-2 overall and 5-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. Winona State is sixth overall in the conference.

They will be on the road next weekend for two conference games against an undefeated Southwest Minnesota State and a 1-5-1 Sioux Falls.

Game times are set for 1 p.m. on both Oct. 12 and Oct. 13.
