The Warrior gymnastics team posted a big win against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans on Thursday night in McCown Gymnasium during their “Think Pink” meet. Winona State University won the team, all-around and all four of the individual event titles to surpass the Titans and earn their third win of the season.
The Warriors posted their second-highest team score of the season, a 183.175, to overthrow the Titans’ 180.075 team total.
Brooke Baures won both the balance beam and uneven bar titles, while Jade Donaldson earned a win on the vault and Veronica Peterson claimed the floor exercise title.
Donaldson also won the all-around competition with a score of 36.925 over UW-Oshkosh’s all-around competitor, Krystal Walker.
Winona State started their meet on the vault, where every member of the vault squad scored a 9.025 or higher to contribute to the team’s highest event total of the season so far—46.775.
Donaldson led the team with her yurckenko vault, which scored a 9.425. This was the third time she has won the vault title this year.
The Warriors then placed second, third and fourth in the event. Cassandra Mello was second with a 9.400, Brooke Hiestand third with a 9.375, and Peterson tied for fourth with UW-Oshkosh’s Kimmy Robertson with a 9.300.
Joanna Reale placed sixth with a 9.275, and Rebecca Schneider was ninth with a 9.025.
In the second rotation, the Warriors were on the uneven bars, where the team scored a 45.400 for the event total.
Baures had the highest score of the night, a 9.300, to take the title. Two Titans claimed the second and third spot. Leane Blais was second with a 9.150, and her teammate Liz Viel was third with a 9.050.
Baures also dominated on the balance beam, where she scored her season-best of a 9.600 and earned her fifth beam title of the season.
Hiestand scored a 9.350 to put her in the second place position. Donaldson was third with a 9.325. Melanee Pfautz scored a 9.125, which put her in sixth place overall.
The team scored a 45.400 total on beam as they went on to their final rotation on the floor exercise.
The Warriors posted their second-highest team total of the season so far on the floor with a 46.650, where every Warrior scored a 9.050 or higher. They also swept the event, placing first through fifth place.
Peterson, who is a freshman, earned a career-first individual event title and her highest score for her routine so far this year, a 9.500 to place first overall. Her routine highlighted two backwards double salto tumbling passes, one in a pike and the other in a tuck position.
Donaldson opened her routine with a sky-high double pike, placing second overall with a 9.425.
UW-Oshkosh’s Walker rounded out the top three spots with a 9.400.
Pfautz scored a 9.350 for her performance, which put her in fourth, and Mello placed fifth with a 9.300.
Katie Seehusen tied for seventh with UW-Oshkosh’s Danielle Turner. Both earned a 9.075.
Hiestand rounded out the floor lineup with a 9.050 to tie for ninth place with UW-Oshkosh’s Emily Ryan.
The Warriors looked much stronger at this duel meet and are now one step closer to reaching the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association championship meet as a team. This is a team goal shared by both Baures and Donaldson.
“As a team, our goal is to make it to the national competition in New York. Our team has a very strong bond this year. You can feel the passion and heart during practice and during meets,” Baures said.
Donaldson added, “Even though our team is young we have a group of believers who will fight until the end. The team really has a heart this year and has become extremely close.”
The Warriors will travel to Eau Claire, Wis. Feb. 14 to take on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds.
