Soccer starts season 2-0 with weekend match ups

After a pair of weekend games on the road, the Winona State University women’s soccer team opened up their 2014 season with two wins against Michigan Tech on Friday, Sept. 5 and Northern Michigan University on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Junior Mehan Bolton scored one goal in each of her appearances to help lead the team to their 2-0 start.

Northern Michigan played host to the Warriors on Saturday, where Winona State posted their second win of the season over the Wildcats, 4-1.

Both teams played a scoreless first half, but the Warriors managed to post 12 shots while the Wildcat’s had three.

Two minutes into the second half, in the 47th minute, senior Cailyn McCauley scored her first goal of the year with assists from Kati Baker and Nicole Sames to lead the Warriors 1-0.

Two minutes later, Bolton scored her second goal of the season on an unassisted breakaway shot.

Senior Shauna Rodman upped the score in the 66th minute to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead and record her first goal of the year.

Ten minutes later, the Wildcats scored their first goal of the match with the help from Abbie Cook.

In the final minute of the game, Northern Michigan crossed the ball into the back of their own net for an own goal, to finalize the score 4-1.

The Warriors totaled 22 shots during the game, with 14 of those being on goal.

Taylor Zehren had four shots, with three on goal. Bolton and Baker each had three total shots, with two being on goal.

Alaina Kne, McCauley and Sames each totaled two shots. Both of Sames’ shots were on goal, while one of McCauley’s and Kne’s were on goal.

Devon Richards, Meg Riebau and Rodman also posted one shot each.

Goalkeeper Racheal Oleson played a full game. She saved four shots and allowed one goal.

On the Wildcats’ side, the team totaled eight shots, with five of those being on goal.

Kim Rietveld and Taylor Smith each had two shots to lead Northern Michigan.

The Wildcats’ two goalkeepers, Caroline Glantz and Alexandra Simmons, combined made ten saves and allowed four goals.

Last Friday, Winona State opened up its 2014 season with a 2-1 win over Michigan Tech.

The Warriors were first on the board when Sames scored her first goal of the 2014 season in the game’s 11th minute.

The Huskies tied the game up, 1-1, during the 65th minute from a goal by Jenna Proctor.

Four minutes later, Winona State’s Bolton came through to score the winning goal of the match, for her first of the year.

The Warriors posted 19 total shots, with eight on goal.

Riebau and Bolton each had four total shots, with two of those being on goal and Sames’ first goal.

Darlan Molter posted two shots, while Kenzie Rose, Hayley Bach, Zehren, Rodman, Baker, Richards and Kne each chipped into the team’s total with one shot.

Oleson made six saves while allowing one goal.

Michigan Tech posted 14 total goals, with seven of those being on goal.

Lexi Herrewig led the Huskies with seven shots, five of which were on goal.

Michigan Tech’s goalkeeper, Jenna Phelps, made six saves and allowed two goals.

Winona State will host two games this week, with their first conference matchup against Upper Iowa University at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11 at Verizon Wireless Stadium in Winona.

The weekend’s second game will take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, also at Verizon Wireless Stadium against Emporia State University.
