Soccer records two shutout victories at home

Three individual Warriors posted three goals over the two-game home stand this past weekend to improve Winona State University women’s soccer record to 7-1 overall in the season.

With these two shutouts from the weekend, the Warriors are now No. 2 in the NSIC (4-1) behind the undefeated teams of Augustana and Minnesota State, Mankato (5-0).

In the first matchup of the weekend on Saturday, Winona State played host to St. Cloud State University. The Warriors came up with the win 2-0 with a pair of career goals for two Warrior players.

The first goal of the game was scored in the first half in the 33rd minute by junior mid fielder Hannah Burt — the first goal of her career as a Warrior — off of Alaina Kne’s corner kick. Kne was awarded with the assist.

Freshman forward Holly Berling added her first career goal, and the winning score of the game, during the 65th minute of play in the second half, off of an assist from Burt.

As a team, the Warriors recorded a total of 19 shots during the game to St. Cloud’s seven.

Nine of the 19 total shots were on goal with Meg Riebau leading the team with an individual three shots with one being on goal.

Kati Baker, Shauna Rodman, Burt and Kne each chipped in two shots to the team’s total, with each having one of their shots on goal.

Sam Armando, Mikaella Sabinash, Darian Molter, Nicole Sames, Madalyn Jansen and Berling added one shot each.

Goalkeeper Rachel Oleson made four saves and did not allow any goals to pass through her possession.

St. Cloud had a total of four shots on goal to their seven total shots during the game.

Gabby Fleck and Kara Espinosa led the Huskies with two shots each, while Haley Greving, Ally Herod and Naomi Kolhoff contributed one shot, each on goal, to the team’s total.

St. Cloud’s goalkeeper Kenzie Hanzilk made two saves and allowed two Warrior goals.

In the second game at home in Warrior Stadium, Winona State took on the University of Minnesota Duluth to a game that remained tied 0-0 until the last 20 minutes of the matchup.

In the 70th minute of the match, Riebau scored the lone goal of the game to give the Warriors the 1-0 win over the Bulldogs. Burt and Sames helped with the play, with the teammates each earning an assist for the day. This was Riebau’s second goal of the season.

The Warriors tallied 13 total shots against the Bulldogs, with six of those shots being on goal.

In this game, Baker led the team with her four shots, having had one be on goal.

Taylor Zehren contributed her two shots, both on goal, to the team while Cailyn McCauley, Bach, Riebau, Burt, Rodman, Molter and Kne each added one.

Oleson made one save during the game for her second straight shutout and fifth of the season.

On the Bulldogs’ side, Megan Helberg had the team’s sole shot on goal and helped contribute to their five total shots as a team.

Sheridan Reiners had two shots individually to lead St. Cloud. Her teammates Marissa Ganske, Jennifer Smith and Helberg each added one shot.

Bulldog goalkeeper Marissa Rosa made five saves and allowed one goal.

Next weekend, the Warriors will host NSIC opponents Minot State University (3-1-1 in the NSIC) and the University of Mary (1-2-2 in the NSIC).

The first of two games will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, while the second home matchup will be played at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5. with both games being played at Warrior Stadium.
