Soccer on six game winning streak

The No. 22 Winona State University’s women’s soccer team began its two-game road campaign over the weekend, first with a 1-0 win over NISC opponent Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

On Saturday afternoon in Moorhead, Minn., the Warriors recorded their first victory after a scoreless 90 minutes of regular time.

Junior defender Madalyn Jansen scored her first career goal as a Warrior to give Winona State the win against the Dragons in overtime.

While Jansen plays on defense, she took the chance offensively to score off of a free kick about three minutes into the added playing time.

Leading Winona State with the game-winning goal, Jansen also contributed two individual shots to the Warriors’ 25 total shots, with 11 of those being on goal.

Senior Taylor Zehren had a game-high seven shots, with three of those being shot on goal.

Alaina Kne recorded four shots with two being on goal, while Kati Baker and Darian Molter each added three shots with two on goal.

Hayley Bach counted two shots and Nicole Sames, Mikaella Sabinash, Hannah Burt and Meg Riebau added one each.

Goalkeeper Rachel Oleson made two saves, while allowing none of the opposing players to score to record her seventh shutout of the season.

The Dragons recorded nine total shots as a team with two shots on goal.

Annika Greaney and Erin Nyberg each contributed three shots, while teammates Jessica Johnson, Kelsey Schatz and Taylor Maestas-Miller each had one shot.

Moorehead’s goalkeeper Ashley Leintz made ten saves and allowed one Warrior goal.

Winona State’s second game on the road had the team traveling to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on Northern State University.

Sames put up the first score of the match for the Warriors in the 14th minute of the match off of an assist from Burt.

In the 59th minute Zehren increased the Warrior’s lead 2-0 with a goal of her own. Burt was again awarded with an assist.

The Wolves’ only scoring opportunity of the night happened during the game’s 59th minute with Northern State’s Alyssa Wide scoring the lone goal for her team.

With the 2-1 final score, the Warriors came away with their sixth straight win of the season.

The Warriors totaled 13 shots and five shots on goal against the Wolves.

Molter, Burt, Kne and Riebau led the team with two individual shots each.

Amy Flasch, Shauna Rodman, Sames, Zehren and Baker recorded one shot each and Oleson allowed one goal and did not make any saves.

Northern State totaled nine shots on the day with one shot on goal.

Anna Bondy was the Wolves’ top contributor with three shots. Allie Macdonald, Andrea Boisner and Wilde had two shots each.

Goalkeeper Brittany Tietz made three saves and allowed two goals.

With six consecutive wins, Winona State is now 11-1 overall on the season and 8-1 in NSIC play.

The Warriors have totaled 20 goals on the season so far. With six games left remaining in the regular season, Molter leads the team with four individual goals. Bolton and Riebau have two each, and eight other Warriors have scored one goal each on the year.

Sames leads with three assists, while Bolton, Rodman, Burt and Baker have two. Eight others have one each. Winona State has recorded 19 total assists.

The Warriors have made 103 shots on goal, and Baker leads shots on goal with 14. Molter, Rodman and Zehren each have three and Riebau rounds out the double digits with ten.

As a team, the Warriors have taken 210 total shots. Baker also leads the team with 29 shots individually. Zehren has recorded 23, Rodman and Kne each have 22, Riebau has 21; Molter has 20; Bolton has 18; Sames has tallied 14.

This weekend Winona State will play host to two NISC challengers.

On Saturday the Warriors will face the University of Sioux Falls (1-10 overall and 1-8 in NSIC), and on Sunday they will face off against Southwest Minnesota State University (7-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 in NSIC). Both games are set for 1 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.
