Warrior soccer records season’s second loss to Bemidji State

The No. 18 Winona State University’s women’s soccer team dropped its first game and tied the second on the road this past weekend. With the loss and tie, the Warriors have now dropped to third place in the NSIC standings, behind Augustana College and Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Winona State brought its eight-game winning streak to an end after the team suffered its second loss of the season to Bemidji State University on Friday in Bemidji, Minn.

Both teams remained scoreless until the 21st minute of play when Beavers’ Sarah Braum scored the only goal of the match to ensure Bemidji State’s 1-0 win over the Warriors.

Winona State managed 11 total shots during the game, with four of those being on goal.

Freshman forward Darian Molter led the Warriors with a game-high four shots, with one being on goal. Hannah Burt and Kati Baker had a combined four shots, with two of those shots being on goal. Alaina Kne, Nicole Sames and Meg Riebau contributed one shot each to the teams’ total.

Warrior goalkeeper Rachel Oleson made four saves and allowed one goal.

Bemidji State also had a team total of 11 shots, with six of those on goal. Christine Szurek and Miranda Famestad each had three shots to led the Beavers.

Goalkeeper Sonja Barr also made four saves, while allowing zero goals.

On Sunday afternoon, Winona State traveled to Crookston, Minn. to take on Minnesota Crookston. The game would result with the Warriors first tie of the season.

The matchup between the Warriors and Golden Eagles would make it the first game in the teams’ series history to end in a tie (21-0-1), with the game ending scoreless, 0-0, even after the two teams played in two overtimes.

Despite the Warriors outshooting Minnesota Crookston with 17 shots to the Golden Eagles seven, none of their ten shots on goal wound up in the back of the net.

Sames led the team with five shots with four being on goal. Molter had four shots, while Kenzie Rose had three. Baker contributed two shots to the teams’ total.

Shauna Rodman, Riebau and Kne had one shot apiece. Oleson made four saves during the lengthy matchup.

The Golden Eagles’ totaled seven shots during the game, with Ellie Brettschneider having led the team with three shots, with two on goal.

Courtney Armborst and Beth Lastovich each added two shots to the teams’ total.

Minnesota Crookston’s goalkeeper Lexie Gauger made eight saves against the Warriors.

Winona State (13-2-1 overall, 10-2-1 in NSIC) will be back in action against NSIC opponent Concordia University, St. Paul at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 for its final home game of the season at Warrior Stadium.

The Warriors will end their regular season play when they face the undefeated (15-0 overall, 12-0 in NSIC) University of Minnesota, Mankato Mavericks at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2 in Mankato, Minn.
