Film review series: “Jackie Brown”

Matthew Lambert/ Winonan

Now that we are entering the third week in February, the month of Quentin Tarantino movies, it’s time to look at his most underrated movie of all time: “Jackie Brown.”

The movie follows the title character Jackie Brown (played by Pam Grier in a comeback role), who is a money smuggling flight attendant and is being threatened by the FBI (two agents played by Michael Bowen and Michael Keaton) to give up her employer Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). Robbie is a gun smuggling, pot smoking, obnoxious-hair-wearing gangster who doesn’t like loose ends. For fear of Brown giving him up, Robbie pays for her to get out of jail through a bondsman, Max Cherry (Robert Forster in an Oscar nominated role). When Cherry picks Brown up from jail, sparks fly as Brown and her jazz music smite Cherry.

After Robbie tries to threaten Brown – in which Brown aims a gun at his crotch – Brown works with the FBI to try and take down Robbie. Brown has her own plan though, working with Cherry to try and steal $150,000 dollars from Robbie, without the FBI knowing.

As I said before, this is probably Tarantino’s most underrated movie. While most Tarantino movies have obnoxious violence and an eccentric storyline, this movie doesn’t. But don’t worry, it’s good that it doesn’t. Tarantino makes up for the lack of violence with outstanding character performances and a funky, soul-filled score featuring Bobby Womack, The Supremes and The Delfonics.

Why should you watch this movie? It’s classic Tarantino.

Pam Grier leads an all-star cast that also features Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda and Chris Tucker, with each character making this movie go from good to outstanding. Watch “Jackie Brown.” You won’t be disappointed.
