Men’s golf ties for second place in season opener

Mackenzie Kush/ Winonan

The Winona State University men’s golf team opened the spring season this weekend with a meet in Ashland, Neb. at Quarry Oaks Golf Course.

Winona State tied for second place in the tournament with Concordia St. Paul with a score of 611.

Junior Mitch Holm said, “It’s been a long winter off with no tournaments, and it will be good to get out and compete again with the guys. So far through workouts and winter hitting practice, the team has looked solid.”

Holm said this tournament was a good indicator of how the team is doing early in the year compared to other schools in the conference.

The Warriors shot 297 as a team on Friday and posted a 314 on Saturday.

Minnesota State Mankato took the team title shooting 606 for the two days.

Holm won the individual tournament title hitting rounds of a 70 and a 76.

Freshman Jonathan Lindquist said he expected the team to do well at the meet.

“I know all the guys have been playing pretty good, and the fact they we had been getting to play outside for the past week before the snow came there are no excuses,” Lindquist said.

Lindquist placed sixth individually at Quarry Oaks, shooting a 72 on Friday and a 78 on Saturday.

Holm said the meet went well overall, despite the windy conditions. The team hopes for better weather when they head back to the same course in two weeks for conference play.

The Warriors next match will be at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo, Iowa for the Upper Iowa Spring Invite that will take place April 2-4.
