Women’s tennis tacks on two losses after weekend play

The Winona State women’s tennis team squared up against University of Sioux Falls and Augustana College over the weekend. These competitors would prove to be too much for the Warriors as both games resulted in a loss.

First on the Warrior’s docket was Sioux Falls. The final score ended 6-3 in favor of the Cougars.

In the doubles, the Warriors took the first matchup with Havelka and Daane beating Alison Kauss and Emily Erickson of Sioux falls with an 8-6 score. Scruggs and Dahl fell to Joey Bosch and Stacey Beard 8-6 and Grossen and Willkom fell to Kara Bunkers and Abby Seigenthaler 8-0.

The other two Warrior victories came courtesy of Dahl and Havelka in the singles portion of the match. Havelka took down Kauss with scores of 6-1 and 6-2 to give the Warriors the first singles win.

Following the win, the Warriors dropped the next singles game before Dahl in the third game won her sets 6-1, 7-6 and 7-0. Sioux Falls swept the rest of the singles games to come away with the victory 6-3. This loss dropped the Warriors to 6-7 on the season.

Finishing the pair of weekend games on Saturday against Augustana, the Warriors lost their fifth straight match, this time by a score of 8-1.  Again, the Warrior win came courtesty of Dahl, who partnered with Scruggs in the No. 2 doubles spot to beat Berkley Darr and Heather Sullivan of Augustana 8-2.

The other doubles matches resulted in losses for the Warriors, the No. 1 spot was an 8-3 loss while the 3 spot was an 8-0 loss. No Warrior was able to defeat an Augustana player in the singles portion of the match. Havelka, Daane, Dahl, Scruggs, Grossen and Willkom all fell to Augustana players which sealed the win for Augustana and gave Winona State another loss during their homestand.

On the season, the Warriors are now two games less than .500 at 6-8 overall while holding a 5-4 record in the NSIC. Up next for the Warriors are matches against MSU Moorhead on April 11 and against the University of Mary on April 12, both games are to be played in Moorhead, Minn.
