Men’s golf finishes second at St. Cloud Invite

Kilat Fitzgerald/Winonan

After finishing in the top three in its first two meets of the season, the Winona State University men’s golf team found themselves tied for second in an 11-team invite hosted by St. Cloud State on Monday, Sept. 28.

“It’s a really good year for our kids. We have really high expectations,” coach Jeff Straight said.

First-year Michael Schmitz led the way for the Warriors, shooting a one-over par 72 in the final round after opening with a 73 to finish tied for sixth.

“Michael’s really helped us out a lot. He’s really a great leader,” Straight said.

During both rounds, Winona State racked up a score of 299 for a combined two-round score of 598. The score gave the Warriors a second place tie with Bemidji State. The hosting St. Cloud State finished with a final score of 575, winning by 21 strokes. Following in fourth place was Augustana with a score of 601, three shots back of the Warriors.

“One shot can make a difference,” Straight added. “It’s about mastering your brain.”

Straight explained how the composition of the course could have had an effect on the outcome of the meet.

“The golf course was different, little more country club,” he said. “With a green like that, you don’t always see what you get.”

Senior Jake Olsonoski matched his beginning round of 74 in the final round, putting him in an 11th place tie.

Sophomore Jonathan Lindquist finished in a tie for 15th place in the tournament, shooting a final round score of 78. On the first day of the tournament, Lindquist shot an even par 71 to finish in a three-way tie Jack Barnhart and Troy Rynannen, both from the Huskies.

“Overall, we had a good rhythm,” Straight said. “Trying to make it to regionals is our team goal.”

Lucas Peterson shot 78 to finish six-over in the first round while Nick Hernandez and Mitch Holm finished the first day with equal scorecards of 80.

Winona State heads to the NSIC Fall Championship, which was held on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 and 6, at The Jewel in Lake City, Minn.
