A cyclist proudly flies the Minnesota flag after attaching it to something they could hold while riding. On Saturday Jan 31, cyclists rode together honoring Alex Pretti who had been shot at according to the New York Times “10 times in less than five seconds” by ICE on Jan 24.
Community members start to gather outside and inside of Adventure Cycle and Ski and prepare for their around 2-mile ride. First organized by a Minneapolis based bike shop called Angry Catfish where Alex Pretti would frequent, bike shops across the United States and even nationwide participated in the memorial ride for Alex Pretti. Murphy knows that Minnesota’s state bird, the loon, is a symbol of resistance. After seeing the loon depicted online, she created posters including the loon for others to zip tie to their bikes. “I wanted to have people who saw us riding around get more of an idea what our message is. So having a community bike ride is great because more bikes, the more better…This grassroots community is alive and thriving in Winona and I love to see that and support it.” Murphy said. The rising wings and then the North Star at the top demonstrate our resistance movement. After the ride, the cyclists were welcomed inside Adventure Cycle and Ski for cider and 3 dozen cookies. (Elly Herrick)Making the full loop around Lake Park, community members made their own signs and held them while cycling. (Elly Herrick)Murphy had printed signs with the names of people who had passed away in ICE custody as well as the Bill of Rights.
