The Warrior gymnastics team collected the team title at a triangular meet against host school, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh Feb. 14. This is the second meet in a row they have won and the fourth overall win of the season.
Winona State University posted its third highest team score of the season with a 181.825 to best the Blugolds (181.775) and Titans (179.950).
On the vault, all of the Warriors’ contributing scores were a 9.075 or higher. Jade Donaldson won her second vault title in the last two meets and her fourth vault title of the season with a 9.425.
UW-Eau Claire’s Julia Stedman was second with a 9.375 and teammate Dez Stanton rounded out the top three with a 9.325.
Cassandra Mello and Veronica Peterson tied for fourth place, each with a score of 9.275.
Brooke Baures added her 9.175 and ended up in seventh place overall. Joanna Reale rounded out the vault lineup with a 9.075 which was good for 11th place overall.
The team’s vault total was a 46.225, their fifth combined team total over a 46.000 so far this season. On the uneven bars, the Warriors recroded an event total of 44.375.
Baures placed second with a 9.400, her second top-three finish of the season.Before she competes, she thinks positively, reminding herself to do her best.
“My words to myself before I compete is to just do my thing, and it will all fall into place,” Baures said.
Donaldson tied for fourth place overall with a 9.100, with UW-Eau Claire teammates Karla Hagen and Michaela McCamey-Metropulos.
Melanee Pfautz earned a 9.075 for her routine and ended up seventh.
UW-Oshkosh’s Leane Blais won the uneven bars title with a 9.475 and Liz Kiel, also from UW-Oshkosh, was third with a 9.225.
The Warriors posted their third highest team total of the season on the balance beam with a 44.700. Mello was the only gymnast to place above a 9.000 on the event during the meet. She finished second overall with a 9.450.
Krystal Walker of UW-Oshkosh finished first with a 9.475 and McCamey-Metropulos of UW-Eau Claire was third with a 9.400.
Donaldson was the next highest finisher at sixth overall with an 8.950.
Also finishing in the top ten was Brooke Hiestand. She tied for eighth with an 8.875 with Erin Olson of UW-Eau Claire and Stephanie Gorman of UW-Oshkosh.
The Warriors scored well on the floor exercise, where they posted a 46.525 for their event total.
Hiestand scored highest for the Warriors with a 9.450. She tied for second place with UW-Eau Claire’s Stedman.
Donaldson scored a 9.400 to tie for fourth overall with Stanton of UW-Eau Claire.
Pfautz earned a 9.350 for her routine and was seventh overall. Peterson posted a score of 9.325 to place eighth. Katie Seehusen was 12th with a 9.000.
Elizabeth Stubbs of UW-Eau Claire took the floor title with a 9.500.
In the all-around competition, Donaldson took second with a 36.875. Walker, of UW-Oshkosh, won the all-around title with a 37.025.
With the season already past its halfway point, the Warriors are looking strong heading into their last meets of the season, but improvements can always be made.
“This year we are really head strong on what we want to accomplish as a team. If we have a rough time, we fix what we need to and come back stronger than the week before,” Donaldson said.
The Warrior gymnastics team will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 18 to host Hamline to their final home meet of the season. Competition is set to start at 6:30 p.m. in McCown Gymnasium.
