The mural in the entrance of Somsen Hall was commissioned in the 1930s as part of the Work Projects Administration (WPA). The mural’s purpose was to show the beginnings of Winona, however, the painter John Martin Socha, painted this mural with a “lens of mainstream ideology at the time” according to the piece commissioned in 2017 called “Somsen Hall Mural Context: The Founding of Winona and the Somsen Hall WPA Mural” by Iyekiyapiwin Darlene St. Clair form St. Cloud State University and Jill Ahlberg Yohe from Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Annual International Night: Crossroads of Culture
On Wednesday Nov. 2, International Student Services hosted an international coffee hour in Gildemeister Hall. This event is typically held on the first Wednesday of each month. The events offer a chance for students to interact with other students from around the world in an educationally-focused environment. Depending on what the students decide, the events can range from very casual to quite organized.

During Thursday night on Oct. 24., the amount of rain was so drastic, an email was sent out to students about relocating their cars in the gravel lot due to ankle high rain fall. Students stood outside of the Quad and Prentiss- Lucas hoping to get soaked from cars passing by. The next day, the volleyball courts in front of PL are proof of that. Students have called it the ‘PL Pool”.

Mouacheupao spoke on her experieces growing up in Saint Paul, which is home to the highest population of Hmong people in the United States. As the child of refugees, she lived in an in-between state of Hmong culture and American culture.

The price of these metered spots runs 2 dollars an hour and allows drivers to park in metered spots located in the Kryzsko Commons lot as well as Johnson Street.

On Wednesday, Nov. 9, Winona State held a zoom conference to outline ideas for the Comprehensive Facilities Plan, which was titled “Our Brilliant Tomorrow”. One of the key construction plans focused on during the presentation was the eventual demolition of Gildemeister, Watkins and Prentiss-Lucas Halls in order to make way for the Center for Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Engagement, and Learning (CICEL) project and the campus mall.

On Tuesday Oct. 25 a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event was held to commemorate the completion of the Leading Energy Savings and Sustainability (LESS) project. This project makes Winona State University a leader of sustainability in Minnesota. The LESS project cuts carbon emissions down by 25 percent each year. The Ethnic Studies Department’s search for a faculty member finally ended with the hiring of Dr. Tara Lopez from Northern New Mexico College. The program was always meant to have two faculty go.winona.edu members. Until Lopez’s hiring, only one of those spots had been filled by current Chairperson Dr. Kim Park Nelson.
