This year’s Winona State University senior art exhibit opened for viewing on April 25, 2022. Artwork is on display in Watkins hall and Laird Norton Center for Art & Design for students to view. The work on display attempts to show the evolution of the fourth-year students’ art and design design abilites in the program.

Dancescape performed a variety of dances on Feb. 17-19 in the Fusillo Theater of the DuFresne Performing Arts Center. Eleven different dances of varying mood, pace and atmosphere were performed throughout a 90-minute show. The Dancescape cast dedicated their final Dancescape performance of the weekend to Dancescape performer Hannah Goman, who passed away over the weekend.

Open Mic Night was inspired by the Common Book of the year, “A War for Kindness” by Jumil Zaki. Zaki touches on the importance of sharing writing and prose as a way to build empathy and see various perspectives.

The Frozen River Film Festival (FRFF) returned to Winona from Feb. 6 to 13 for its 17th year. The FRFF received more submis- sions this year than ever before running up to its return to in-person programming. In one week, FRFF delivers more than 80 films from 30 different countries, workshops and Q&A opportunities with directors, all integrated throughout the Winona community. The festi- val is especially unique in that it is an all-doc- umentary film festival.

On April 7, 2022, at 5 p.m., the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Department partnered with the Advocacy Center of Winona to organize the Take Back the Night event and march. The event started in the Science Laboratory Center with speakers and performers, and then the group made their way outside to march down Huff St. and through campus.

The Winona State Potato Club is an organization dedicated to the celebration of the potato in its many forms. The creation of the club originally began as a joke, but then there was genuine interest in the idea of the club. Their next meeting is Sunday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. in Minné 103.

Joy Davis Ripley presented her photography project highlighting physical landscapes that connect with mental illness through her lens. “I just want to get some of these hard conversations out there in the public eye so that people can feel less alone,” Ripley said.

Winona State University’s Student Senate recently passed two motions in an effort to support its LGBTQIA+ and transgender student population. On Oct. 5, Student Senate officially recommended the university place sanitary trash cans and menstrual products in all restrooms across campus. Currently, there are several gender-neutral restrooms already in place, including in Kryzsko Commons, but Student Senate has also recommended placing more in the academic buildings where there are not any available.
