Warrior tennis end regular season with 19-4 overall record, take second at NSIC Championship

The Winona State University women’s tennis team fell short against the number one seed, Augustana, in the NSIC championship Saturday. The Warriors had a first round bye in the tournament. Winona State took on the Upper Iowa Peacocks in their first game of the NSIC tournament.

Jessica Urban said, “The team has been working very hard and has been competitive with the other top ranked schools in our conference.”

Winona State beat the Peacocks with a score of 5-2 After the first three doubles matches, the Warriors were up 2-1.

Laura Lindstrand and Urban won their match 8-6. Laura Roesslein and Leah Koehler won their match with a score of 8-2. The Warriors came out on top in the singles matches 3-1.

Erin Kappers won her match with two scores of 6-3. Leah Dahl beat her opponent 7-6, 0-6, 1-0 while Koehler won her match 6-2 and 6-1.

Koehler said, “I thought our team played very well.”

The Warriors then took on Augustana in the NSIC championship match. Winona State lost with a score of 1-5.

This is the second consecutive year the Warriors have taken second place in the NSIC Championship.

“Our team has talent,” Urban said. “We played at top of our game in the tournament.”

The Warriors fell behind after the first three doubles matches. They were down with a score of 1-2.  Roesslein and Koehler were the only doubles team to win a match with a score of 8-4. Augustana finished up the match by winning three singles games.

Urban said, ”The team practices several hours every day and it has paid off by earning the ranking of 2nd in Conference. This year, the team has worked on and off the court to become successful. On the court, we work together and push each other so everyone reaches their full potential. Off the court, we are all friends which creates a positive atmosphere for the team.”

The Warriors ended their season 19-4. Winona State awaits their NCSS postseason decision.
