Megan Marr, a student athlete at Winona State University, is known for many things. She is known for her speed during the 100 and 200-meter dash on the Winona State Women’s Track and Field team. Marr is known for her love for education and children as an elementary education major and for her warm-hearted smile and friendliness seen on campus. But most importantly, Marr is known for strong devotion to God as a Christian.
The lives of all college athletes are spread thin, especially for Marr, as she has classes five days a week, Track and field five days a week, and clinical field experience four days a week. Maintaining time for God is both hard and stressful with a schedule like this, but it is by far her number one priority. Whether starting her day by spending time with the words from the Bible to a simple prayerful conversation with God as she walks to campus, Marr finds time balance in this fast-paced world we all live in.
“Above all, God has to be number one,” Marr passionately voiced.
While finding the balance between being a devoted Christian and student athlete, Marr has learned to appreciate merging both key aspects of her life together. On the track, Marr is often seen spreading the love of God to her teammates and praying before meets and practices for extra strength. Not only does Marr spread God’s love to those on her team, but Marr also often prays for the safety and support of all the women Marr races against on the track.
Modeling the balance between athletics and prayer, Marr leads other athletes in their faith as a member of both Athletes in Action (AIA) and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Leading herself and the varying student athletes into deeper relationships with God, Marr hosts a bible study every Wednesday. During these sessions, the student athletes discuss finding a balance between God and their sports and spreading the word to other athletes. Since it is no lie that all Christians may struggle with maintaining their faith, these Christian student-athletes all learn from and with each other in strengthening their relationships with God.
“I love leading the bible study because it holds me accountable to be with my bible and create a study for them,” Marr exclaimed. “I am very happy when I get to see the spark in the faces of the girls as their relationship deepens on these Wednesday nights.”
Not only does Marr want to support her fellow athletes in the Christian community, but she also loves to help guide any student on Winona State’s campus.
“Just know that God is a forgiving God and he is rooting for you every second of the day. He strives off seeing you happy, and slowly starting to get to the bible or praying will make you feel so much better, and He will help,” Marr explained. “I encourage everyone here on campus to take this step”
