Golf Recap:
The Winona State University women’s golf team headed south to Edmond, Okla. for the Grace Shin Invitational. Facing off against the Central Region, the Warriors finished sixth out of the 19 teams who participated. They also finished sixth among Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) teams, beating out Concordia St. Paul and Minnesota State University in this match. The top finishes for the Warriors included Kelby Anderson finishing with a total of 147 and tied for 18th in the invitational, Lindsey Lund finishing with a 151 and tied for tied for 26th out of all golfers and Kessa Mara finished tied for 31st among the participants and scored a 152 for the weekend.
The Winona State men’s golf team traveled to Edmond for the Skip Wagnon Invitational. The Warriors finished fourth among the 18 teams participating, picking up higher scores than conference opponents Concordia St. Paul, Bemidji State, Minnesota State and Sioux Falls. Javier Ramos Casariego led the way for the Warriors, finishing eight strokes under par.
Luke Maas and Tyler Gandrud finished two strokes above par with total scores of 212.
Both the men’s and women’s golf teams will travel to Larchwood, Iowa for the Sioux Falls Invitational on Oct. 13-14.
“Our results reflect the time we put into sport,” Maas said. “Our captain, Peyton Coahran, has set a good example of what it takes to be fully committed to getting better.”
Cross Country Recap:
Heading towards St. Joseph, Mo. for the Griffin Invitational on Oct 4, Winona State’s women’s cross-country team won the invite with a team score of 15 points. The first five runners to reach the finish all wore purple. Sophia Taarud continued her dominant season with a first-place finish with 17:25 time. Kylie Anderson followed suit with a 17:45 and second overall. A pack of runners from Winona State came within seven seconds of each other, with Ella Voit, Stella Rusch and Kelsey Young closing out the top five.
Libby Ray, a second-year runner for the Warriors, talked about the successful trip for the women’s team.
“Our success isn’t just limited to just one or two standout athletes- multiple team members are performing at a high level. This kind of result reflects our consistent training, teamwork and competitiveness,” Ray said.
The men’s cross-country team also competed at the Griffin Invitational, picking up a second-place finish as a team for the meet. Mitchell Johnstone came in fourth place overall with a time of 25:31. Robbie Spain finished seventh overall with a time of 26:18. Four more Warriors finished in the top 20 to ensure a strong finish to the meet. The men’s and women’s team will look towards the NSIC Championships on Oct. 24 in Wayne, Neb.
Women’s Soccer Recap:
The Warrior women’s soccer team traveled to Sioux Falls to match up against Augustana University, who was tied for first in the NSIC at the time, on Friday, Oct. 4. Paige Bracker scored for Augustana in the 22nd minute to draw first blood in the match.
The Vikings scored their next three goals in between the 55th and 63rd minutes to defeat the Warriors. Johanna Shubert connects on a shot to cut the lead down to three. The Warriors dropped the contest against Augustana four goals to three, with a trip to Wayne State College left on the weekend.
Wayne State was another team without a conference loss in the season, but the Warriors were looking to make a statement against the Wildcats on Sunday, Oct. 6. Madison Barnick connected on an attempt on goal in the 30th minute to give the Warriors their first lead in their match against Jamestown on Sept. 28. Reagan Allen of the Wildcats responded in the 61st minute to tie things up. With seven minutes left in the game, Sam Perez sunk the lead-taking and game-winning shot to give the Warriors a statement victory against a tough conference opponent.
