Women’s golf finishes fifth in weekend meet

The Winona State University women’s golf team competed in the Central Region Fall Preview in Olathe, Kan. Sept. 8 and 9 before heading to Tartan Park Golf Course in Lake Elmo, Minn. to take part in the Holiday Inn Invite September 19 and 20.

“We played really well [in the Central Region Fall Preview],” head coach Julie Hennessy said. “We have two returners and three freshmen. I am excited for this year.”

The Warriors took 11th place out of 19 teams at the Prairie Highlands Golf Club.

As a team, Winona State shot a score of 321 for round one and 331 for round two.

Team captain Katya Hoffman tied for eighth place after ending Tuesday with a 72 and Wednesday with a 79.

“Everyone showed their potential playing against good competition,” Hoffman said.

“It’s a bigger tournament with a lot of competition. Starting out you have a lot of nerves and having a tournament like this helps get them out of the way fast,” co-captain Marissa Geyer said.

Jessica Blanchard ended up with scores of 84 and 83 to tie for 59th place. Madelyn Miller recorded scores of 80 and 89 to tie with Geyer for 64th place. Geyer finished with score of 85 and 84. Courtney Bergum tied for 67th after scoring two rounds of 85 to add to the Warrior effort.

The Warriors took fifth place out of eight teams at the Holiday Inn Invite. Augustana won the invite, followed by the hosting team the Concordia-St. Paul, St. Cloud State and Upper Iowa.

As a team, Winona State finished round one with a score of 335 and round two with a score of 339.

Hoffman tied for 15th place to lead the Warriors with two rounds of 81 for a two-round total of 162, ending at 18 strokes over par.

Geyer placed 20th with rounds of 84 and 83, finishing 23 strokes over par.

Bergum shot an 87 and 85 to tie for 25th. Blanchard shot an 83 and 92 tied for 27th. Miller shot an 87 and 90 tied for 29th.

“We still have a lot to improve on,” Hoffman said.

The Warriors will be traveling to Marshall, Minn, Sept. 26 and 27 to take part in the Mustang Invitational.
