After being moved from Winona to Mauston, Wisconsin, the Warrior baseball team saw two sweeps throughout the week.

The team lost two against St. Cloud State University on Thursday, March 21,  before rebounding with three-wins Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23 against Southwest Minnesota State University.

The first game against the Mustangs started with a well-executed defensive strategy, thanks to junior pitcher Aaron Mutter. The Warriors were able to keep the Mustangs to one hit in the first five innings of the game.

Mutter went on to allow one run on three hits over six innings played.

Winona State managed to put up four runs in the third inning by sophomore infielders Zach Strange and Tanner Williams, junior Sam Kohle and sophomore pitcher Austin Savary.

The Mustangs responded back in the sixth and eighth inning closing the deficit to two runs.

The Warriors stole the game in the eighth, with a stolen base by first-year outfielder Nathan Loomis, a score off an error and a sacrifice fly bringing in junior shortstop Derek Martin to make the final score to 6-2 Winona.

The twin bill on Saturday followed suit with the game on Friday.

In the first game, the Warriors started slow while the Mustangs came out of the gate with two runs by the top of the second.

Winona State picked up pace by scoring three unanswered runs in the bottom of the second and third innings.

This comeback started with a double to left field by junior outfielder Andrew Pliner bringing in junior outfielder Chad Herbst. This was followed by junior catcher Nick Nalewanski hitting ground rule double to bringing in Pliner, and capped with a Savary single to center field, allowing sophomore infielder Tanner Williams to come home and make the score 3-2.

The Mustangs and the Warriors traded runs entering the third inning with a score of 3-3.

Winona State scored two runs in the fifth off Kohnle’s single to left field, which scored Strange and Baumgartner, scaling the score to 5-3.

Southwest responded back in the sixth and eighth inning to even the score at five.

In the bottom on the ninth inning, Kohnle had the game winning single through the right side, which advanced Martin and allowed Loomis to score, making the score 6-5 final.

In total, Winona State’s pitching staff struck out 13 Mustangs combined throughout the twin bill.

The Warriors improved to 11-8 (5-3 NSIC) while the while sweep brings Southwest to 2-11 (1-7 NSIC).

The Warriors are scheduled to play a home doubleheader against Minot State this Wednesday, March 27 and have a three-game weekend series taking place in Crookston starting Saturday, March 30.
