With Registration Day just around the corner on April 6, incoming students are gearing up for the start of the fall semester at Winona State University. Early registration days are especially important for freshman and transferring students, offering a glimpse into campus life, resources, and support systems available for students and families. While it can feel overwhelming, it is also an exciting opportunity to take the first steps towards a successful college experience.
Beyond just signing up for classes, students can start building connections with peers and advisors who will help guide them throughout their first year.
Tania Staley from the Winona State Admissions Office homes in on the importance of making the college transition as comfortable as possible for new students.
“Students are a little bit nervous about what to expect, maybe nervous about speaking to a new faculty member, so we try and make that as comfortable as possible,” said Staley. “We try to have a schedule that we walk them through, so even if they are away from their parents, they are in good hands with us.”
Many students feel anxious about being away from home, uncertain about life after high school, and unsure how their schedules will fit together. These challenges are normal, and Registration Day is designed to address them. By providing clear guidance, step-by-step instructions, supportive staff, students can feel confident about navigating their first day on campus. It also offers a chance to meet other students, creating connections that can turn into a support network throughout the semester.
Preparation is key to a smooth and successful Registration Day. Students should come ready with any questions about their courses, prior credits, or scheduling concerns. Those coming from other states or who have taken Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) courses should bring a record of their completed classes and grades. “If students come prepared with the courses they have taken and their grades, that helps our advisors place them in the right courses,” says Staley. Taking notes, asking questions freely, and connecting with other new students can also make the experience less stressful and more productive.
Ultimately, Registration Day is more than just picking classes, it is an introduction to college life and an opportunity to gain build confidence in navigating both the academic and social aspects of university. By coming prepared, asking questions, and taking advantage of the guidance offered by advisors and admissions staff, students can start the semester with clarity, support, and a sense of excitement. With a little preparation and an open mind, Registration Day can be the first step toward a successful and enjoyable college journey.
