The mural’s purpose was to show the beginnings of Winona, however, the painter John Martin Socha, painted this mural with a “lens of mainstream ideology at the time” according to the piece commissioned in 2017 called “Somsen Hall Mural Context: The Founding of Winona and the Somsen Hall WPA Mural” by Iyekiyapiwin Darlene St. Clair form St. Cloud State University and Jill Ahlberg Yohe from Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Janelle “Nellie” Wollenburg passed away on Dec. 29, 2023 at age 37. She was an incredibly hard-working student and mother and made a large impact on the Healthcare Leadership program in just the first semester she was taking classes.

Annual International Night: Crossroads of Culture
On Wednesday Nov. 2, International Student Services hosted an international coffee hour in Gildemeister Hall. This event is typically held on the first Wednesday of each month. The events offer a chance for students to interact with other students from around the world in an educationally-focused environment. Depending on what the students decide, the events can range from very casual to quite organized.

During Thursday night on Oct. 24., the amount of rain was so drastic, an email was sent out to students about relocating their cars in the gravel lot due to ankle high rain fall. Students stood outside of the Quad and Prentiss- Lucas hoping to get soaked from cars passing by. The next day, the volleyball courts in front of PL are proof of that. Students have called it the ‘PL Pool”.

Lauren Saner works as the current copy editor of the Winonan. This is her first year as copy editor, after having been the sports editor for the Winonan during the 2016-17 school year, and the music features writer for the 2015-16 school year. Before working at the Winonan, Saner wrote for her local newspaper in her hometown, Rochester, MN.

Last Wednesday, March 14, Student Senate voted in approval of an 18 percent hike of the student wellness fee in order to hire a new counselor. The hope is that this will help reduce the two-week wait time and provide students with another counselor to speak to.

Students and community members filled East Hall on Saturday, Feb. 24, for the Rock the Dot: Warriorthon fundraiser led by Warriors For The Kids, a Winona State club that raises money and supports Children Miracle Network Hospitals. The 150 registered dancers helped the club raise a total of $31,595.30 for the hospitals.

Winona State librarian Carol Daul-Elhindi and her husband founded Solomon’s Song in her youngest son’s honor after he took his life in 2016. Solomon’s Song works to promote a healthy mind and body, celebrate diversity and work to stomp out the stigma surrounding mental illness. The foundation holds several awareness events and provides resources for those who need help.

The Warrior Cupboard is a place where students who are unable to provide food for themselves can get access to food and personal hygiene items to last them for short periods of time.
