The mural’s purpose was to show the beginnings of Winona, however, the painter John Martin Socha, painted this mural with a “lens of mainstream ideology at the time” according to the piece commissioned in 2017 called “Somsen Hall Mural Context: The Founding of Winona and the Somsen Hall WPA Mural” by Iyekiyapiwin Darlene St. Clair form St. Cloud State University and Jill Ahlberg Yohe from Minneapolis Institute of Art.

On Wednesday Nov. 2, International Student Services hosted an international coffee hour in Gildemeister Hall. This event is typically held on the first Wednesday of each month. The events offer a chance for students to interact with other students from around the world in an educationally-focused environment. Depending on what the students decide, the events can range from very casual to quite organized.

During Thursday night on Oct. 24., the amount of rain was so drastic, an email was sent out to students about relocating their cars in the gravel lot due to ankle high rain fall. Students stood outside of the Quad and Prentiss- Lucas hoping to get soaked from cars passing by. The next day, the volleyball courts in front of PL are proof of that. Students have called it the ‘PL Pool”.

McKenna Scherer, Editor-in-Chief

McKenna Scherer (she/her/hers) is the Editor-in-Chief of The Winonan as of spring 2021 and continues to write news stories and photograph. Scherer previously held the position of News Editor after having been both a features and news reporter in prior years.

Scherer is in her fourth year at Winona State University, majoring in Mass Communication: Journalism and double minoring in Public Relations and Film Studies.

Besides her duties at The Winonan, Scherer also works at a local restaurant and is active in area activism, often through the WSU Students for Reproductive Justice club, whom she often photographs events for after helping start the club in the spring of 2020. In her free time, Scherer enjoys reading, binging TV shows – primarily from creator Shonda Rhimes – and movies, hanging out with her four roommates and thrifting; she has a thing for knick-knack-y vintage items and t-shirts.

Scherer hopes to move to the Minneapolis or Chicago area after graduation to work in broadcast or print journalism, or for a PR firm focusing on social media content, campaigns and/or influencer collaborations.

The new WSU Advocacy Center is located on the first floor of Gildmeister Hall on Winona State’s main campus and is available to all students. Students may sign up for appointments with Confidential Advocates Jessica Schulz, or show up during open hours as a walk-in when in need. While currently being called the WSU Advocacy Center, students and faculty were invited to vote on a new title for the space on Monday, Nov. 8.

Winona State University’s Student Senate recently passed two motions in an effort to support its LGBTQIA+ and transgender student population. On Oct. 5, Student Senate officially recommended the university place sanitary trash cans and menstrual products in all restrooms across campus. Currently, there are several gender-neutral restrooms already in place, including in Kryzsko Commons, but Student Senate has also recommended placing more in the academic buildings where there are not any available.

Amala Epkunobi, guest speaker at the College Republicans club’s event this past Thursday, Oct. 21. Ekpunobi is a personality for PragerU, a conservative nonprofit that uploads content on various political and social topics, among other things. The event was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., Epkunobi’s speech beginning a bit afterwards and not ending until after 9 p.m. due to many participants in the post-speech Q&A. The College Democrats club at Winona State University held a silent protest outside of Somsen Hall, where the speaker event was held, while also collecting food to donate ot the Warrior Cupboard on campus.

Winona State University held its first event of September and its first-ever ‘I Heart WSU Day’ event outdoors on its main campus on Wednesday, Sept. 1. From 1-3:30 p.m., hundreds of students attended the event and its various offered activities, including tie-dying, a dunk tank, ski-ball and a coinciding club fair, among others. The WSU-lettered sign outside of Phelps Hall was decorated with a brightly colored balloon arc which many students used as a photo op.
