Winona State University celebrated Homecoming Weekend from Oct. 7-9 with its traditional festivities, including the Homecoming Parade event, marking its first since COVID-19 swept through the country. The Homecoming Parade was held on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m., stretching down Huff Street between Broadway and Mark Streets, right across from Main Campus. During the Homecoming Parade on Oct. 9, various university alumnus, clubs and athletic teams were featured, including the men’s basketball team. The team brought mini basketball hoops and basketballs which children on the sidelines of the parade got to play with as the team passed by. Head Coach Todd Eisner walked with members of the basketball team in the parade, watching one child dunk into one of the mini hoops. (McKenna Scherer)

One banner event during homecoming week was the homecoming concert, the first concert on campus since fall of 2019, sponsored by the Warrior Entertainment Network and the Homecoming Committee. Contributed by Mercedes Johnson.

Winona State University’s football team suffered a tough loss during homecoming weekend, falling 52-49 to Northern State University, their season record now sitting at 3-3. The game began at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 on home turf at Maxwell Field with stands full on every side for the festive game. While the Warriors suffered their second loss in a row, player Jake Balliu was named the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week following the game. The Warriors will play again at Maxwell Field next week on Oct. 16 against Southwest Minnesota State University. (Mohammed Islam)

Last year, all homecoming festivities were held to a minimum due to COVID-19 while the year prior to that, inclement winter weather also dampened festivities. During this year’s Homecoming Parade event on Oct. 9, Winona State University alumnus, clubs and athletic teams showed up and showed out. The International Club had more than 10 members walk in the parade, holding flags and some dressed in traditional wear. (McKenna Scherer)
