A little after 3:00 am on Jan. 17, 2025, Pickwick Fire Department responded to a fire at the Black Horse Bar and Grill, located off of Highway 61. Eight additional fire departments were called in to help bring water due to the lack of fire hydrants in the area. The building was completely destroyed by the fire, but no injuries were reported.
The Pickwick Fire and Rescue released a statement regarding the fire.
“Due to the rapid advancement of the fire exterior fire operations were conducted. As there are no hydrants in Homer township numerous mutual aid departments were called in to assist with hauling water to the scene. Much appreciation goes to Rollingstone, Minnesota City, Goodview, Winona, Wilson, Ridgeway, Nodine, Dakota Fire Departments.”
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is under investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshals office. Winona County law-enforcement and Winona area ambulance service also responded to the call.
Shortly after the fire, a GoFundMe was set up by Terry Klonecki to help support the owner, Andre Klonecki, in rebuilding. After one week the GoFundMe has raised just over $15,000, nearing its goal of $18,000. Well wishes and encouraging words have filled the page.
“Tonight we lost a long time Winona establishment, so much history at The Black Horse, it is a big loss. Andre and his team have done so much for our community, holding fundraisers, weddings, funerals and so much more.” Terry Klonecki wrote.
Since it’s opening the Black Horse has hosted a multitude of events every week. Live music, bingo, comedy shows, wrestling, chili cook offs and many more community centered events are common at the Black Horse.
“It’s our turn to help them out, Chris lived above the Black Horse and lost everything but the clothes on his back. It will take time to rebuild and get people back to work. It’s time for the community to give back to them. Please help however you can.” Terry Klonecki wrote.
The employee who lived above the Black Horse was not injured in the fire, but suffered a great loss.
Andre Klonecki has made several posts on Facebook since the fire, giving thanks for the outpouring of support from the community.
“Thank you everyone for reaching out/donating to Chris and our family. It’s very overwhelming and an emotional time for all of us. If you sent us a message or called and we didn’t reply it didn’t go unnoticed. Time will tell what the future holds.” Andre Kloneck wrote.
As of right now there has been no official answer on whether the Black Horse will be rebuilt or relocated. The GoFundMe page can be found here.
