Student dies from snowboarding injuries

Derek Harms, junior recreation, tourism and therapeutic recreation, passed away on Sunday, April 8 from injuries he suffered during a snowboarding accident.

Harms died in Duluth, Minnesota at age 20 and   he was originally from Barrington, Illinois, and came to Winona State in the fall of 2015.

Denise McDowell, vice president of enrollment management and student life sent an email to students on Wednesday, April 11 to express her sadness.

“Losing a member of our community is very difficult, and I know Derek will be missed by many,” McDowell said.

She continued by stating that any student who may be struggling with Harms’s death should reach out to the Winona State counseling and support services.

A funeral service was held for Harms at St. Michael Episcopal Church in Barrington, Illinois on Sunday, April 15.
