Men’s golf tee off season with win

Winona State University men’s golf team started the 2019-2020 season with a dominant win at the Watkins Invitational after competing Friday and Saturday at the Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minnesota.
The Warriors ended with a five-stroke win and, shot a two-day total of 568 to obtain the team title.
In the opening round on Friday, the Warriors shot -10 as a collective unit.
Brady Madsen, junior, and Dylan Brown, sophomore, finished in a three-way tie for first place with a score of 140 (-4) with J.J. Cooney of Sioux Falls University.
Ultimately, Cooney won individual medalist honors on the second playoff hole.
Madsen led round one Friday with a 66 (-6), with Brown tailing with a 68 (-4) in the first round.
The duo both finished 140 (-4), with Madsen going 74 (+2) and Brown going even 72 on Saturday.
Junior Matthew Chandler, went -3 throughout the par-4 holes and, led all players with 26 total pars, he also finished 142 (-2) through both rounds.
Senior Tyler Beeck collected a solid 147 (+3) throughout both rounds and first-year Matt Turner recorded a 153 (+9) in the outing.
Turner, along with senior Bentley Glass, shot one eagle a piece during the tournament.
The men’s golf B-team also looked to impress at the Watkins Invitational.
According to head coach, Jeff Straight, the golf teams are very competitive.
“Our B-team, we want to beat everybody else too in the conference,’’ Straight said.
The team’s secondary unit placed 6th out of 15 and was led by senior Isaac Westlake with a total of 147 (+3), which placed him 16th in the individual race.
The Warriors return to the links on Sept. 29-30 at the Super Regional Preview in Owensboro, Kentucky.
