Winona State University’s women’s golf team hosted and won the Warrior/V-Hawk Duel on Sunday afternoon at The Bridges Golf Course against Viterbo University.

First-year Toni Baldwin talked briefly on what the team’s expectations were going into the duel with Viterbo.

“Our team goal is to just play to the best of our abilities, and to really have fun and be relaxed while we play.” Baldwin said, “Everyone on this team is hardworking and capable so I know we can go low.”

Baldwin’s playing did not disappoint.

Winona State defeated Viterbo by a team score of 321-334.

Sophomore Alexis Bell led Winona and the event with a score of 76, which was a new collegiate career-low.

Bell led all players with 11 pars on the day and tied for the lead with a pair of birdies.

Sophomore Savana Anderson tied with Viterbo’s Madison Zloto for third-place overall with a round of 80.

Anderson totaled 10 pars and tied for the lead on par 3 holes.

Sophomore Bree Downie tied for fifth with a round of 82 and first-year Jessica Smith placed seventh overall with a round of 83 to complete the team score.

Playing as individuals, sophomores Ally Loiselle (85) and Lina Jang (89) also finished inside the top-10 by placing eighth and ninth, respectively.

Coach Jeff Straight touched on how the event was great exposure for the team.

“The Duel Sunday with Viterbo was a fun event against a very good NAIA school that was well coached,” Straight said.  “It was a good way for both teams to play all players on the roster to see how they’d perform in competition, and not having to travel is a big bonus for our team as we have a few long road trips upcoming to Missouri and Arkansas.”

The Warriors will have the Midwest Classic on their agenda in Warrensburg, Missouri Oct. 7-8.
