The mural in the entrance of Somsen Hall was commissioned in the 1930s as part of the Work Projects Administration (WPA). The mural’s purpose was to show the beginnings of Winona, however, the painter John Martin Socha, painted this mural with a “lens of mainstream ideology at the time” according to the piece commissioned in 2017 called “Somsen Hall Mural Context: The Founding of Winona and the Somsen Hall WPA Mural” by Iyekiyapiwin Darlene St. Clair form St. Cloud State University and Jill Ahlberg Yohe from Minneapolis Institute of Art.

The first event was the Italian Art Exhibition that was here at Winona State University in the Darrell W. Krueger Library, and the second was the Berlin: Shifting the Paradigm Student Exhibition hosted just off campus at the Laird Norton Building.

Janelle “Nellie” Wollenburg passed away on Dec. 29, 2023 at age 37. She was an incredibly hard-working student and mother and made a large impact on the Healthcare Leadership program in just the first semester she was taking classes.

Annual International Night: Crossroads of Culture
On Wednesday Nov. 2, International Student Services hosted an international coffee hour in Gildemeister Hall. This event is typically held on the first Wednesday of each month. The events offer a chance for students to interact with other students from around the world in an educationally-focused environment. Depending on what the students decide, the events can range from very casual to quite organized.

During Thursday night on Oct. 24., the amount of rain was so drastic, an email was sent out to students about relocating their cars in the gravel lot due to ankle high rain fall. Students stood outside of the Quad and Prentiss- Lucas hoping to get soaked from cars passing by. The next day, the volleyball courts in front of PL are proof of that. Students have called it the ‘PL Pool”.

Reanne Weil is a News Reporter for The Winonan and started in Spring 2023. Weil is a fourth-year at Winona State University majoring in Journalism and double-minoring in Spanish and Creative Digital Media.

In addition to working for The Winonan, Weil is a member and captain of the Division II Women’s Soccer Team at WSU. She is also a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Outside of school, Weil works remotely for her local newspaper. She loves spending her free time with her friends and family. She enjoys watching the television show Friends and Disney movies with her favorite snack, popcorn and M&M’s.

The arts are something the whole community in Winona enjoys. Laird Norton is a building for art and design students. While the building has two floors, only the first floor is useable due to funding. Laird Norton has the potential of becoming a staple for art and design students, but being mostly funded by donations from WSU donors the timeline on when this will happen is unclear.

Every February, the citizens of Winona get together to enjoy a plethora of documentary films put together by the Frozen River Film Festival. Over 200 of these films are submitted by directors from all over the world and are sifted through by a group of 20 volunteers. The organization has a deep-rooted relationship with Winona State University to where several films are hosted on campus for all students to view free of charge.
