Winona State University’s Health and Wellness Services hosted “Get Yourself Tested Week” last week.
Free sexually transmitted disease/infection tests were offered at the Integrated Wellness Center and the Semcac Family Planning Clinic in downtown Winona.
Sexual health films were also played throughout the week.
On the first day, a short film discussed ways people can protect themselves, including different types of contraceptives and the importance of getting tested.
On Wednesday Nov. 7, the topic was hooking up and alcohol, and how the two go hand in hand.
A film on sexual violence and abuse closed the week. This film looked into behaviors that can be considered sexual harassment and what forms sexual abuse can take.
At some of these short film showings, Winona State students spoke up, not only to voice their opinions and personal stories about each subject in order to inform other students, but to be able to reach out and relate to students.
Get Yourself Tested Week was not only hosted to offer free testing. The event also promoted the importance of detecting sexually transmitted diseases and infections.
It encouraged students to get tested on their own, and when they have a new partner.
According to statistics from Health and Wellness Services, one in every four Winona State students has chlamydia.
Health and Wellness Services constantly host a variety of events to raise awareness to any health problems that can happen to any student on campus and to anyone in general.
For questions about this event or any other past or future events held by Health and Wellness Services, students can contact coordinator Erica Thibodeaux or graduate assistants Kendra Lekson and Shawnessy Mohawk.
