The No. 10 Winona State University women’s soccer team’s undefeated record was shattered over the weekend, recording one win and their first loss against Wayne State and Augustana, respectively.
The Warriors were led by sophomore forward Meg Riebau in the first of the Warriors’ two matchups, where she scored the team’s lone goal to record the win against Wayne State on Saturday afternoon in Wayne, Neb.
Riebau’s sole, unassisted goal — and her first of the season — happened late in the second half. In the first half neither team managed to score, but Winona State outshot Wayne State 13 shots compared to the Wildcats’ seven.
The Warriors managed 23 total shots during their matchup against Wayne State with ten of those shots on goal.
Riebau also led Winona State with shots and shots on goal in the game. She managed four shots total with two of those being on goal and one goal.
Kati Baker, Mehan Bolton and Nicole Sames each added three shots to the team’s total. Two of Baker’s shots were on goal, while Bolton and Sames each had one.
Shauna Rodman, Taylor Zehren and Darian Molton each contributed two shots to the team.
Molton—one of Winona State’s Athletes of the Week — had both of her shots during the game on goal.
Alaina Kne, Devon Richards, Kenzie Rose and Holly Berling had one shot each to add to the Warriors’ total.
Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Oleson, the reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Goalkeeper of the Week—notched her third consecutive shutout of the year. She allowed zero goals to be scored and made four saves against the Wildcats.
Wayne State totaled 13 shots with four shots being on goal.
Kelsea Lambert led the Wildcats with three shots, while Josie Brown and Veronica Walker added two shots each individually.
Goalkeeper Margaret Harma allowed one goal and made nine saves.
In the second road matchup in Sioux Falls, N.D., Winona State suffered their first defeat of the season to NSIC opponent Augustana.
The Vikings’ Samantha Tymkowicz scored the only goal of the match to give Augustana the win in the 43rd minute of the game.
The Warriors battled it out against the Vikings and came up with 18 total shots with half of those being shots on goal.
Kne, Rodman and Riebau headed the Warriors with three shots apiece. Rodman had two shots on goal, while Kne and Riebau each had one shot on goal.
Baker, Zehren, Sames and Molter each chipped in two shots individually, while Mikaella Sabinash contributed one shot to the team’s total.
Oleson managed to save six attempted goals and allowed one goal.
Up until this point in the season Oleson has recorded 26 saves against all opposing teams and has allowed three goals so far in six games.
On the Vikings’ side, Augustana had a total of 25 shots with seven being on goal.
Stephanie Stevens was the Vikings’ leader with six total shots, with one on goal.
Teammate Kirsten Smith added five shots with one on goal and Annie Thoresen contributed four to the team’s total, with two being on goal.
Goalkeeper Ashley Limmer made nine saves, while allowing zero goals.
The next four games of the 2014 season will be played at home.
The No. 10 Warriors will play host to St. Cloud State University at 1 p.m. on Sept. 27 at Warrior Stadium.
The following day on Sept. 28, Winona State will again host the University of Minnesota Duluth. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
The third and fourth home games will take place on Oct. 3 and Oct. 5 against Minot State University and the University of Mary, respectively.
The Warriors are now 5-1 overall and stand second overall in the NSIC with 2-1 conference play behind Minnesota State, Augustana and Minnesota Duluth — all with 3-0 NSIC records.
