The cold February weather will give Winona State University students a chance to brave the cold to learn how to ice fish.
The Winona State University Fishing Club will host a free ice fishing day open to the public on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Franklin St. Boat Landing in Winona.
Fishing Club president Cade Laufenberg said they will do their best to provide equipment if people need to borrow it, but “it is preferred that anglers at least bring their own ice fishing rod and reel.” They will also be assisting “anyone and everyone” that needs explanation on how to ice fish.
“It will be an opportunity for experienced and beginner ice fisherman alike to join us on the ice and learn, borrow equipment and just have fun,” Laufenberg said. “Make sure to have a valid Minnesota Fishing License.”
Laufenberg said it could become an annual event, but for right now the event was drawn up on pretty short notice since spring break is around the corner and soon the ice will be thawing out.
He added they hope to get 15-20 people on the ice and to raise the fishing club’s presence on campus. Ice holes will be pre-drilled so anglers can start fishing right away.
“We will not be cleaning fish for people, but if anyone wishes to keep fish they are more than welcome to,” Laufenberg said. “We’re hoping that everyone catches fish.”
