With the 2019-20 season currently underway, Winona State University’s women’s basketball team is looking to learn and improve from last year.

Coming off a 15-13 record (12-10 Conference) in the 2018-19 season and reaching the Sanford Pentagon for the second round of the NSIC Tournament for the fifth straight season, the team is getting ready to produce again.

Entering a season with no seniors on the roster, the junior class will have to adapt.

With Allie Pickrain, junior, leading the team in points with 10.8 ppg in the 2018-19 season, the junior unit will have to step up.

Also, with new first-years and incoming transfers, the team has to restructure while setting the tone.

Sophomore transfer Katie Sowa will become an addition to the team and bringing a 3-point threat to the offense.

Averaging 7.1 points and shooting 40.9% from downtown as a first-year at the University of Indianapolis.

“We are excited and fortunate to add Katie to our roster,” coach Scott Ballard said.

  The team will also see six new incoming freshmen, Caitlin Riley, Abby Callahan, Alex Dornfeld, Taylor Fautsch, Ava Sergio and Shea Dechant.

With being 8-4 at home in 2018-19 season and being 7-7 on the road, the Warriors felt like that is an area that needs to improve.

The Women’s Basketball team have played two exhibition games so far against Marquette University and the University of Iowa.

The Warriors start their regular season with a game against Saint Mary’s University Saturday, Nov. 9 at home.

Winona State begins NSIC play at Upper Iowa on November 30th. The first round of the NSIC Tournament is set for Feb. 26 with the remaining rounds held at the Sanford Pentagon again this season on Feb. 29-March 4.
