The mural in the entrance of Somsen Hall was commissioned in the 1930s as part of the Work Projects Administration (WPA). The mural’s purpose was to show the beginnings of Winona, however, the painter John Martin Socha, painted this mural with a “lens of mainstream ideology at the time” according to the piece commissioned in 2017 called “Somsen Hall Mural Context: The Founding of Winona and the Somsen Hall WPA Mural” by Iyekiyapiwin Darlene St. Clair form St. Cloud State University and Jill Ahlberg Yohe from Minneapolis Institute of Art.

On Wednesday Nov. 2, International Student Services hosted an international coffee hour in Gildemeister Hall. This event is typically held on the first Wednesday of each month. The events offer a chance for students to interact with other students from around the world in an educationally-focused environment. During Thursday night on Oct. 24., the amount of rain was so drastic, an email was sent out to students about relocating their cars in the gravel lot due to ankle high rain fall. Students stood outside of the Quad and Prentiss- Lucas hoping to get soaked from cars passing by. The next day, the volleyball courts in front of PL are proof of that. Students have called it the ‘PL Pool”.

Carolyn (Carly) Hauschild is a photographer for the Winonan as of Spring 2022. Carly is a Senior majoring in Mass Communication: Advertising, along with minors in Creative Digital Media and Public Relations.

Hauschild’s hobbies include doing portrait photography for her own small business, watching/playing sports, being involved in a college ministry and spending time with friends/family. She is also an intern at Pleasant Valley Church in the Creative & Technical Arts and student ministries.

The organization has a deep-rooted relationship with Winona State University to where several films are hosted on campus for all students to view free of charge.

Dancescape performed a variety of dances on Feb. 17-19 in the Fusillo Theater of the DuFresne Performing Arts Center. Eleven different dances of varying mood, pace and atmosphere were performed throughout a 90-minute show. The Frozen River Film Festival (FRFF) returned to Winona from Feb. 6 to 13 for its 17th year. The FRFF received more submis- sions this year than ever before running up to its return to in-person programming. In one week, FRFF delivers more than 80 films from 30 different countries, workshops and Q&A opportunities with directors, all integrated throughout the Winona community. The festi- val is especially unique in that it is an all-doc- umentary film festival.

Shortly to follow, Kieck had two free throws and a triple of her own. To end the first half, Riley scored another three-point- er to bring Winona State to 39-35 at halftime.
