On March 1, Women’s, gender, and sexuality studies professor Mary Jo Klinker invited Gina Favano and Suzanne Hogan, the hosts and creators of “Back Channel Radio”, to discuss the importance of the Winona Boathouse community. Favano is a member of the Winona community and has preserved the history of Winonans and the island of Latsch. Both Favano, Hoganm and Klinker discussed the importance of the Winona Bouathouse community as a way to kick off Womens History Month.

Jena Archer, a graduate student at the Winona State University Writing Center. With the English graduate program’s funding being cut, the Writing Center’s available hours could drop as low as 30 to 40 hours which would challenge the center to keep open.

A group of three Winona State University students found a missing dog on Jan. 29, 2023. They were able to usher it into their Jeep Wrangler to warm up and proceeded to call 911 to help reunite the dog with its owner.

Badminton Club aims to expand club membership and involvement across campus
The Winona State Tennis team played in Florida over spring break against five different teams. Winona State finished the week off 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference. They are set to play against the Minnesota State University - Mankato Mavericks on Friday, March 17 and Sunday, March 19 in the Winona Tennis Center.

On Saturday, Feb. 11 in the Science Laboratory Center at Winona State University, Jennifer Weir and her wife Megan Chao Smith performed a drumming piece for the Frozen River Film Festival. The event was held prior to their film, Finding Her Beat” was screened for audience members. The drummers explained that Taiko drumming plays a huge role in Japanese culture and tradition.

Both the Winona State University Orchestra and Band programs held concerts at Vivian Fusillo Main Stage Theatre on Feb. 25-26 respectivly. Dr. Cullan Lucas led the orchestra ensemble, shown above, while Dr. Melanie Brooks orchestrated the band.

Exploring gender nonconformity, students and faculty weigh in
Dr. Anton Treuer came and spoke about his experiences as a member of the eagle clan of the Ojibwe tribe. Treuer shared some powerful quotes that demonstrated the way he feels it is like to live in this modern world as a native person, while still staying true to his culture.

For $20, students of Winona State University have gotten the chance to climb the Winona Ice Park thanks to Outdoor Education & Recreational Center. The ice is located on the bluffs and is farmed by ice framers why hose water over the walls to freeze.

On Wednesday Nov. 2, International Student Services hosted an international coffee hour in Gildemeister Hall. This event is typically held on the first Wednesday of each month. The events offer a chance for students to interact with other students from around the world in an educationally-focused environment. Depending on what the students decide, the events can range from very casual to quite organized.

Kailey Doeseckle (she/her/hers) is a new addition to the sports reporters for The Winonan. Doeseckle is currently in her second year at Winona State University majoring in Criminal Justice.

In addition to working for The Winonan, Doeseckle is also a part of the Wenonah Players club at Winona State University. She participates in their theatre productions as a crew member.

Outside of school, Doeseckle loves to spend time with her roommate binge-watching their favorite shows. She enjoys watching movies, creative writing, and board games. She also loves to go on meaningless drives to blast all her favorite songs, and spending lots of time outside.

Jessica Miley, a first-year student on the Winona State Women’s Gymnastics team, has stepped into the spotlight. Miley has been learning from her coaches to compete for the team rather than as an individual. Miley shows up every day ready to make small improvements to her routines while encouraging her team to do the same. In competition, she is fierce and focused, but it does not come without preparation.
