The mural in the entrance of Somsen Hall was commissioned in the 1930s as part of the Work Projects Administration (WPA). The mural’s purpose was to show the beginnings of Winona, however, the painter John Martin Socha, painted this mural with a “lens of mainstream ideology at the time” according to the piece commissioned in 2017 called “Somsen Hall Mural Context: The Founding of Winona and the Somsen Hall WPA Mural” by Iyekiyapiwin Darlene St. Clair form St. Cloud State University and Jill Ahlberg Yohe from Minneapolis Institute of Art.

On Wednesday Nov. 2, International Student Services hosted an international coffee hour in Gildemeister Hall. This event is typically held on the first Wednesday of each month. The events offer a chance for students to interact with other students from around the world in an educationally-focused environment. During Thursday night on Oct. 24., the amount of rain was so drastic, an email was sent out to students about relocating their cars in the gravel lot due to ankle high rain fall. Students stood outside of the Quad and Prentiss- Lucas hoping to get soaked from cars passing by. The next day, the volleyball courts in front of PL are proof of that. Students have called it the ‘PL Pool”.

Syerah Mulhern-Allred (She/her/hers) is the sports editor for The Winonan and started with the paper as a reporter in January 2021. Mulhern-Allred is currently a fourth year majoring in Exercise Science with a minor in Coaching.

In addition to working for The Winonan, Mulhern-Allred is also a strength and conditioning intern at the IWC and works the front desk there as well.

Outside of school, Mulhern-Allred likes to workout, be outside, and spend time with her friends and family. She looks forward to writing for the Winonan for one last year and being involved in the sports life on campus again!

One noteworthy performance was the 4x400, consisting of Regan Feit, Alyssa Larson, Brooklyn Schyvinck and Shereen Vallabouy. The four of them took first on Saturday for a facility record and the second fastest 4x400 in Warrior history.

Fourth-year Warrior Liz Pautz took the circle and received strong support from her hitters as well. Second-year Abbie Hlas and third-year Libby Neveau both threw homers in the first inning, scoring second-years Teaghen Amwoza, Engelhardt and fourth- year Warrior Marissa Mullen, scoring on the two hits for a 6-0 lead at the end of the first inning. Overall, Winona State had eight runs with ten hits and no errors. Leading the way was Neveau with five RBI.

The 2021 football season officially ended for the Winona State Warriors with a 7-4 record. The Warriors bagged their last victory of the season against Minnesota State – Mankato, 18-16, also marking Coach Sawyer’s 197 win and final game of his 26-year coaching career. Winona State University’s football team suffered a tough loss during homecoming weekend, falling 52-49 to Northern State University, their season record now sitting at 3-3. The game began at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 on home turf at Maxwell Field with stands full on every side for the festive game. While the Warriors suffered their second loss in a row, player Jake Balliu was named the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week following the game. The Warriors will play again at Maxwell Field next week on Oct. 16 against Southwest Minnesota State University.
