Nestled on the third floor of Memorial Hall is a dance studio that, despite its barren appearance, holds cherished memories of music and laughter that threaten to burst from the doors. This liveliness is a result of another sports club at Winona State University, Dance Society.
“Dance Society is a club for anybody who loves to dance, regardless of how much experience you have,” Sarah Nagle, the American College Dance Association representative for the club said. “It was created to bring dance lovers together and make connections with others who share the same passion as you.”
As Nagle and the rest of the leadership of the club describe, the club is for anyone who enjoys dancing, regardless of the amount of experience they might have. There is no pressure to know exactly how to perfect the moves or count the beats of the music, rather, everything is taught to those attending throughout the course of the meeting, meaning everyone learns together.
Meetings are open to anyone and everyone who desires to join and does not require anything other than a general interest in dancing. It is also an inexpensive form of unique exercise than can be done with friends or on your own once a dance is learned.
And, for those worried about time commitment, attending one meeting does not mean you’re expected to attend all of them.
“We don’t require attendance at all meetings in order to be a member,” Cameron Domnick, the president of Dance Society, said. “People can choose what meetings they want to attend and there are no worries if certain meetings don’t work for people to attend.”
Domnick also emphasizes that Dance Society thrives on inclusivity, ensuring that no matter one’s physical capabilities, the dances can be adjusted to fit the specific needs of the individual.
The leading members of Dance Society ensure that the dance studio is a judgement free space, where everyone learns and thrives together.
The club also plans a variety of activities for their members including learning dance combinations from well-known media, playing dance related games, having dance parties, and having an end of semester potluck when the year begins to wrap up. They also have an exciting opportunity to dance in the Winona State Homecoming parade.
However, as many of the members can attest, the best part about being a member of Dance Society is meeting others who also love to dance and forming lasting relationships while simultaneously participating in a fun and unique physical activity.
“Anybody who loves dance is welcome to come join us,” Nagle said. “We just like to get together, make connections, and dance together in a relaxed and casual environment.”
Overall, Dance Society prides themselves in their capability to share their love of dance. They strongly encourage others to give their passion a chance, as it may spark a newfound joy in the hobby that many members have been doing since they were very young.
“Dance Society meets at 6:45pm-7:45pm on Monday evenings in Memorial 300,” Domnick said. “Our Instagram is @wsudancesociety and we post all updates and information there. If anyone has questions, please reach out to [email protected].”
