The mural in the entrance of Somsen Hall was commissioned in the 1930s as part of the Work Projects Administration (WPA). The mural’s purpose was to show the beginnings of Winona, however, the painter John Martin Socha, painted this mural with a “lens of mainstream ideology at the time” according to the piece commissioned in 2017 called “Somsen Hall Mural Context: The Founding of Winona and the Somsen Hall WPA Mural” by Iyekiyapiwin Darlene St. Clair form St. Cloud State University and Jill Ahlberg Yohe from Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Janelle “Nellie” Wollenburg passed away on Dec. 29, 2023 at age 37. She was an incredibly hard-working student and mother and made a large impact on the Healthcare Leadership program in just the first semester she was taking classes.

Annual International Night: Crossroads of Culture
On Wednesday Nov. 2, International Student Services hosted an international coffee hour in Gildemeister Hall. This event is typically held on the first Wednesday of each month. The events offer a chance for students to interact with other students from around the world in an educationally-focused environment. Depending on what the students decide, the events can range from very casual to quite organized.

During Thursday night on Oct. 24., the amount of rain was so drastic, an email was sent out to students about relocating their cars in the gravel lot due to ankle high rain fall. Students stood outside of the Quad and Prentiss- Lucas hoping to get soaked from cars passing by. The next day, the volleyball courts in front of PL are proof of that. Students have called it the ‘PL Pool”.

Nathan Kronbeck (he/his/him) is a photographer for the Winonan newspaper, new as of fall 2022. This is his first year doing anything for a publication but has many years of experience as a photographer in his personal life.

Nathan is also a new student here at WSU, he transferred from Inver Hills community college after getting all his generals done, with enough credits to be a junior. He is majoring in creative digital media with a minor in marketing. He has a current service manager position at Hy-Vee, where he works mainly on weekends so he can focus on classes and shooting assignments.

He enjoys doing photography for fun outside of work and carries his camera on just about every hike, outing, or get-together.

On March 1, Women’s, gender, and sexuality studies professor Mary Jo Klinker invited Gina Favano and Suzanne Hogan, the hosts and creators of “Back Channel Radio”, to discuss the importance of the Winona Boathouse community. Favano is a member of the Winona community and has preserved the history of Winonans and the island of Latsch. Both Favano, Hoganm and Klinker discussed the importance of the Winona Bouathouse community as a way to kick off Womens History Month.

Winona State’s last face-off with Northern State was on Jan. 22, 2022, a contest that saw the Warriors knock off the Wolves 83-74 in front of nearly 3,500 fans in Aberdeen, S.D. On Friday, the Winona State faithful saw the home side start in impressive fashion with a nine-point lead in the opening minutes of play, but they could not finish in the same manner.
